Written and performed by W&L faculty, students and community members, and edited by Kimberly M. Jew, “Letters” is based on letters to the editor to The News Gazette and its predecessors. A community arts performance at heart, “Letters” will transport audiences back in time as the performers bring to life the diverse and rich voices that have lived in this area for the past 200 years. Local and traditional music will help tell the story of a small rural town that has persevered through war, modernization and great social change. This dramatic work celebrates Lexington’s continued identity as a true “hometown,” a quality that makes the spirit of Lexington unique and universal. Back by popular demand! This year’s production is directed by Rob Smith with music by the Poison Bottom Boys.

“If one must compare The Steel Wheels to another act in order to get an idea of their music, imagine a blend of the passion of The Avett Brothers, the instrumentals of Old Crow Medicine Show, and then sprinkle in the backwoods feel of The Legendary Shack Shakers. In truth, attempting to compare them with anyone is an injustice, since after one listen you can hear that they stand very well on their own perch” – John Walker, Americana Roots. Commenting on the Shenandoah Valley’s newest and brightest songwriting force, Adam Harris, Asst. Producer of NPR’s Mountain Stage, “The show went amazing and The Steel Wheels killed, just like I knew they would.”
